Hartley Botanic, Greenfield

Client

Hartley Botanic Limited

Location

Greenfield

Specification of Work

Complete Roof Refurbishment and Decorating

Project length

20 Weeks

The Project

Access roof from the inside of the building and rip back all ceiling plaster. Safely remove and dispose of asbestos fibre board. Re-roof the inside of the ceiling by using the underside of roof sheets and sliding them through the trusses, securing them by screwing up to existing rafters. This also includes painting roof trusses to match.

Client Problems

The client had a number of existing issues with the rapidly deteriorating state of the roof/ ceiling.

  • Plaster was falling off from the ceiling and risking staff safety

  • Large holes and cracks lead to water ingress and leaks over machinery and the factory floor

  • Asbestos fibre boards were no longer considered safe as they were fragile and would fall occasionally

  • The ceiling and roof were no longer providing adequate insulation properties

  • The building perceived an outdated and poorly maintained look

Our Solution

An initial risk assessment was carried out by both Spartan Construction and a HSE (Health and Safety) advisor to determine areas of risk for this installation and to properly ensure the correct PPE was supplied and used. Spartan Construction scissor lifts and power towers were transported on site and a cherry picker was hired so that work could commence.

Qualified men from Spartan Construction were to then paint all roof trusses and structural beams brilliant white, to match the underside of the roof sheets to be installed.

Once the painting had been completed, Spartans roofing experts were set to install the roof sheets that had arrived on site by sliding each end into a gap in the trusses, and then securing each sheet with two 60mm timber tech screws, creating a strong barrier protecting the staff from falling debris, and dramatically enhancing the look of the factory.

The profile of roof sheet used for this project was: CS32/1000

There were five long bays in this factory at 30 metres long, each possessing their own unique issue, and requiring their own unique solution. This was very complex and required extra thinking and a little improvisation. The factory would also be fully operational during works commencing which tested the Spartan team, manoeuvring around objects and working machinery whilst in a busy factory environment. We minimally disrupted production.

At the end of the job, we moved all machinery and gear off site and we are proud to say that we have forever changed the look of this factory for the better, and have created a close bond with this customer.
